聾啞人士使用的「手語」，大陸稱為「啞語」。「啞語」包括手語和指語。手語即利用手勢和表情與他人交流溝通，國際聾啞人協會對「手語」有統一規範；而使用拼音文字的民族，利用幾十個字母的指式連續動作，則稱為「指語」。
